Distracted by Free Wood

Hello, Stephen here and sometimes project plans get interrupted. This time it was by free plywood.

Normally, I have to go out and buy supplies whenever I start a new project.  I don’t have the storage space for all the different materials I might need, so a trip to one or two hardware stores is the start of every project.

But when someone is moving and has some plywood they can’t store anymore, that is better than shopping.

I had in my head (and written in my notebook) what I was going to work on during the holiday break at Christmas and New Year’s, but a pile of wood showed up and took up the middle of my workshop. I had no room to store the plywood, so I had to make something with it.

These 5/8” half-sheets of plywood had some damage on one end (from being stored standing up on a dirt floor), but that left me with plenty of wood for three projects that I had not planned to get around to until the summer.

·       Table saw accessories storage – for under one side of the table saw

·       Planer stand (on casters) – for under the other side of the table saw

·       Drill press accessories storage – for a floor mount drill press

My goals for organizing the workshop is to have the accessories needed for a machine to be as close to that machine as possible.  And all accessories to be in one location.  (Currently I have different boxes on shelves with some accessories like dado head, other blades, and feather boards.  For the drill press, I have used prime storage space in a tool box on the other side of the workshop for storing my ½” drill, other bits, hole cutters, and other accessories.)

And to have as many things on casters as possible.

Each the of the new pieces are simple box shapes that have been glued, doweled, and screwed together.  (Drawers and drawer fronts will be added just before painting, when the weather is warm enough to paint outside.)

The table saw accessories storage will have three storage areas;

  • the fence, push sticks, miter gage, and other items are kept handy on the open side (The fence is removed so I can cover my table saw with a wooden worksurface.)

  • The close end will have drawers for extra blades and accessories.

  • The far end will have two shelves to hold the portable circular saw and miter saw, so all tools with spinning blades are kept together.

The planer stand will have a drawer or two added. (Currently just an open shelf with the instructions and spare planer blades.)

The drill press accessories storage has three drawers (needing drawer fronts) to hold drill bits, hole saws, and portable hand drills.

All the cabinets will be painted (with the paint sitting on the drill press accessories storage).
